Tile Backsplash: How to Install

One thing that can make or break a kitchen’s appearance is the backsplash area. This is the area you see between the worktops and any wall units. This area is usually around 18 inches high, some are more and some are less, but this is the area we are talking about. We all know that this area looks great when it’s tiled, but it’s usually a daunting task because of wall sockets, and many people just don’t know where to start. Read on to find out how you can tile your kitchen backsplash.

The tools required to tile a backsplash are fairly minimal. You will need several tools for this job. The most expensive tools will be a tile cutter and a notched trowel. These other tools listed here will also be needed, a pencil, bucket, sponge and rubber gloves. Tile spacers are needed to space each tile correctly, but check your tiles first, as many tiles now come already made with spacing lugs on the tile so there is no need for spacers. If you’re not completely sure your worktops are level, then you should have a level too. Assuming you already have your tiles, adhesive and grout then lets get started.

The good thing about kitchen tile backsplashes is you don’t have to center the tiles like you would when tiling a whole wall or floor, you can simply tile a full tile onto the worktop, and work a full tile from the end of the worktop and work towards the corners. This means that you will have nice full tiles along the worktop surfaces and end up with just simple cuts into the corner. When working from the opposite wall, even if you have half tile cuts going into the corner, it won’t matter as once it’s all grouted it will still look like a full tile when looked at as a whole.

Using the notched trowel spread the adhesive onto the wall, and lean the trowel at a 45 degree angle. This will create an even spread with grooves in the adhesive. As you press the tiles into the adhesive the grooves create a suction, which holds the tiles in place while drying. On long open areas you can tile quite a large area of the backsplash quickly, but when you come to a socket this will be more time consuming for you.

The best way to tile around sockets is to unscrew the socket plate and tile behind it like you see with wallpaper. You can either cut the rectangular shape out of the tile using a tile saw or if you have many sockets you can use a hand held angle grinder, but it must have a diamond wheel. This will cut tiles with ease. You may need to buy some longer screws when replacing the sockets to allow for the thickness of the new tile.

Once you’ve tiled your kitchen backsplash, you can proceed to grout using the sponge. You can grout the whole of the backsplash, then go back to where you started grouting and rinse off any excess grout with a rinsed out sponge.

The best tip for your newly tiled kitchen backsplash is to finally polish the whole thing once it has dried with a cotton cloth. This will get rid of any streaks left behind by the grout. Instead of grouting the section where the tiles meet the worktop, this line should be filled with a waterproof caulk or silicone. This will help to prevent any liquid spilled on the worktops, and thus cannot penetrate your kitchen tile. To keep your kitchen tiles clean permanently, clean once per month using a reliable glass cleaner.

Creative Kitchen Tile Ideas

A creative kitchen tile design can add the touch of personality, charm and style your kitchen makeover has been missing. With the variety of shapes, sizes and materials that kitchen tiles are available in, the possibilities are nearly endless.

The backsplash of your new kitchen is an excellent place to exert some creativity. A metallic tile can add a sleek embellishment to a subdued modern kitchen. While a polished metal tile would not add comfort to a kitchen that already has several stainless steel touches, it can brighten and modernize a kitchen space with soft white or light wood touches.

A great cost cutting trick that can add interest and pattern to a backsplash is to use the expensive tile you fell in love with mixed in with a less costly option. A charming mosaic can be created with the kitchen backsplash tiles that show off the beauty of the high end tiles, even if it does just make up a portion of the display. This technique can be used on the counters and floors as well.

How to Grout Tile

Grouting the kitchen tiles is a very simple process. The reason to grout tile that is placed down is to ensure that the tile does not shift over time, and also because it gives the area a nicer and neater look.

First, get a bucket and fill it with water. Depending on the amount of tile you have to grout will determine how much water you will need. After you have the appropriate amount of water in the bucket, apply the grout powder to it.

The size of the project will determine how thick the grout needs to be. The bigger the project, the thicker the grout, so please read the instructions and take notice of how much you will need. Take a broom and sweep as much as you can so that there is no dust.

Now pour the mixed grout onto the floor. Using a trowel, begin applying the grout into the spaces between the tiles. The best way to use the trowel is on a 30-40 degree angle across the tile.

How to Grout Tile

Repeat this process on the all sides of the area. Then on about a 90 degree angle, clean up the excess grout that is not being used. Now drop dry grout into the joints and rub it in so it is even.

The last thing to do is to seal the grouted area, most sealers have the sponge on the tip of the bottle so its easier to apply it to the grout. If not, you can use a thin paintbrush. Make sure you apply the sealer evenly.

After that is completed it takes up to 72 hours to be completely dry, but for the most part, you can walk on the tiled area after 24 hours. Be sure and read the instructions that come on the sealant to determine the appropriate drying time.

Dress up your Kitchen with Tiles

Kitchen tiles are more than a way to make your floor look pretty. They can be used as counter tops to add charm to your kitchen. They are also used as a backsplash in the kitchen.

Most of the painted tiles are made of ceramic. Ceramic is a great heat conductor. After all, they are produced from materials that have been heated to high temperatures. They are extremely durable.

Glass tiles are more affordable today than a few years ago. They work well as a kitchen backsplash. They are extremely durable and also impenetrable. They are the perfect choice to use in wet areas. You do have the option of selecting glass tiles that are painted on the back, allowing the color to be chip resistant.

Quarry tiles have a rough surface. They are great for kitchen floors since they provide good foot traction and help prevent falling. They are, however, too porous for counter tops. Quarry tiles can be used in the kitchen as a low priced baking stone.

Marble tiles can turn bland into beautiful. They add beauty to your home. Since they are a snap to maintain, they are often selected for their easy upkeep and durability.

To care for your tile investment, sweep the floor on a regular basis. You can use a vacuum sweeper (without a beater bar). Occasionally, you may need to mop with a mild detergent. Wipe dry with a soft towel to remove any film or residue. The wiping also produces optimum shine on your tile. Use bleach or ammonia based cleaners sparingly on colored grout. They tend to discolor the it. Clean up spills quickly.

Since there are many colors, sizes and tile materials available, the creative homeowner has the capability of creating their own distinctive design. They can mix and match colors and sizes for a unique look.

Tiling Mortar: Mixing Deck Mud and Fat Mud

When tiling a kitchen counter you will run into a choice that has you decide what type of substrate you want to use to set the tile. One popular choice is to use mortar to set the kitchen tiles. Mortar comes a few different types: deck mud and fat mud. We will take a very brief look at what ingredients are used in each mortar and how to properly mix them.

Deck Mud

Deck mud is a dryer substance that isn’t as susceptible to cracking or shrinking. This material is used to cover most horizontal surfaces before laying the tile. The ingredients that make up deck mud are: sand, Portland cement and water. To properly mix deck mud the ratio should be 5 parts sand to 1 part Portland cement. These two ingredients should be mixed thoroughly before adding water to ensure a better consistency. The newly mixed mortar should be a little dry. If the mortar is runny or oozing through your fingers then it is too wet.

Fat mud is a wetter and sticker substance than deck mud. This material is great for when you need to tile a vertical surface such as a kitchen backsplash or bathroom wall. The stickiness allows the fat mud to adhere better to surfaces as well as allowing it to keep its shape. The ingredients that make up fat mud are: plaster sand, Portland cement, type S lime and water. The lime is what gives fat mud its sticky quality. The proper ratio to get a good consistency for fat mud is to mix 5 parts plaster sand to 1 part Portland cement and 1 part lime. Similar to the deck mud, fat mud must have these ingredients mixed thoroughly before adding the water. Remember that this mortar isn’t supposed to be as dry as deck mud; if it is too dry then it won’t stick as well.

The consistency of mortar is very important. If the ratios are off or the consistency is either too wet or dry then the type of mortar that you use will not be as effective if at all.
